What is AvantGo for RSS?

AvantGo for RSS enables you to sync RSS feeds as AvantGo channels. Each time you synchronize AvantGo you can get the latest from RSS feeds offered by bloggers, major media, and any other publisher distributing their content in an RSS format. The feeds are delivered to your device in a format that is optimized for your small screen smartphone or PDA. It's easy to use and free!

What is RSS?

RSS is the acronym for "Really Simple Syndication." RSS is an increasingly popular way for publishers to push content updates to readers. RSS feeds usually include headlines and summaries, but can include full-length articles. In order to read RSS feeds you need an RSS newsreader (also called an aggregator). For those who are mobile, AvantGo is now a newsreader for RSS feeds, in addition to offering full-versions of mobile channels from thousands of sources. Click here for more information about RSS.

Why should I use AvantGo as my mobile RSS reader?

AvantGo now provides a single solution for reading AvantGo mobile channels and RSS feeds while on-the-go. There's no complicated setup or additional software to install. Plus, AvantGo's sync-and-go experience means that your RSS content is always available -- even offline. Each page is accessed quickly from your device's memory without waiting for it to load across the wireless network. If your device has a wireless connection, you can synchronize wirelessly for the latest feed updates, or browse the feeds and links while connected. Did we mention it's free?

Getting Started

How do I subscribe to RSS channels? To subscribe to an RSS feed as an AvantGo channel, you must have a free AvantGo account (subscribe now). If you have an AvantGo account:

  1. Go to the Create an RSS Channel page
  2. Enter the URL of an RSS feed. If you don't know the feed URL, you can have AvantGo attempt to discover the feed by entering the URL of the Web site or page associated with the feed.
  3. Edit the channel settings to optimize for the feed you are subscribing to.
  4. Synchronize your device. Your RSS channels will appear on the AvantGo homepage alongside your other channels. RSS feeds are denoted on the AvantGo homepage with the number of new items next to the channel name.

Features

Easily view "new" items. Easily "save" items
AvantGo RSS channels include all of the active items in the feed. Any new items since your last sync are denoted next to the channel name on the AvantGo homepage and appear in bold text within the RSS channel. If you want to save an item, select the disk icon next to the item title. You may save up to five items per RSS channel.

Easily share photos!
If your RSS feed channel has photos included, you'll find a "Slideshow" link at the top of the channel homepage. Select the Slideshow link to easily flip through the photos in the feed.

Personalize the sync settings for each RSS channel
Use channel settings to optimize for the feed you are subscribing to. You can set the maximum allowable size for the channel, choose whether or not to include images and modify the link depth setting, which tells AvantGo how many page levels it should crawl when synchronizing the channel.

Easily subscribe to RSS channels with AvantGo's AutoChannel for RSS
Use the AvantGo AutoChannel for RSS bookmarklet to easily subscribe to an RSS channel. Just select the bookmark from your browser on a page that includes an RSS feed to jump to the AvantGo RSS channel creation page.

For Publishers

Get a "+ AvantGo" button for your site. Use the AvantGo button creation tool to generate code for a button that you can place on your Website, which makes it easy for your readers to take your feed mobile.
